A. There is a slim chance that there is a freeware program that can recover your lost files. There is a number of conditions to this however.
- Formatting a hard drive normally erases only the File Allocation Tables. so the data is still on the drive.
- If you have not put any files on the drive since the format, including Windows, the files may yet be intact.
- The demo of Active @ UNERASER maybe able to tell you if there are any files recoverable. (I've not used the program)
- File Recovery 4 (freeware) is another program (I've not used) that can recover lost files.
If you do get your files back, or not, I'd recommend you start backing up your data regularly. External HDD's, USB sticks, and CD's are reasonably cheap compared to the cost (dollars and time) to recovering lost data.
For other recovery programs search for "freeware file recovery" via your favorite search engine.

forgot backup data before attempting for OS recovery. How to get the data back?
