If I have Windows Xp Pro installed on a laptop can I go back to vista without a recovery disc?
Q. I have an HP dv6000 running Windows XP OEM, the machine previously came with Vista Home Basic pre-installed but I did not like Vista. The laptop didn't come with a recovery disc for Vista. Can I use the Vista Recovery Disc thats available for free online? I believe Microsft has a site for it.

A. As long as you didn't erase the Recovery Partition...

Try this one first, if it doesn't fix it try the next two...
1. Reboot, and repeatedly press F10 at the HP logo until the recovery screen appears.
2. When the recovery screen appears, press "Next" and then "Yes" to perform a non-destructive recovery (all data saved). After the recovery is finished, the laptop will reboot.

Or to perform a destructive recovery, (***This will erase all your unsaved data!***)
Click "Advanced" and then "Yes".
After the recovery is finished, the laptop will reboot.

Or
Reboot, and repeatedly press F11. Follow on screen prompts.

Why does my computer keep restarting when windows xp is loading up?
Q. Okay my comp will restart every time windows xp loads up, at first I thought it was a problem with the computer itself, but then I decided to switch hard drives; I'm able to post this due to that, as well the computer doesn't restart. The logical answer would be to just use this hard drive but the other one has the most memory and all my data. Only sometimes the hard drive will load up, but when it has a mistake that makes it have to shut down or restart the dilemma thrives again.

A. could be a number of issues.

1. Windows installation is corrupted
2. Master Boot Record is corrupted
3. Boot record is corrupted
4. Bad Hard drive

Fix for Option 1 - Do a repair install, insert your XP disk and boot from it, when you have the option to install windows xp or repair select install, the installation will check to see if you have an exsisting operating system installed, if it finds your current xp installation select it then select repair. This will overwrite your current installation WITHOUT eerasing your data or installed programs .. however you will have to do all the updates again.

Fix for option 2 - insert your xp disk and boot from it, when you have the option to install or repair select repair, this will run the windows xp recovery console, when you have the DOS prompt up type in the following Fixmbr, when completed reboot your computer into normal mode

Fix option 3 - Do as option 2 but type Fixboot at the DOS prompt

Fix option 4.- Replace hard drive and reinstall windows, add the old hard drive as a slave and see if windows can read it, if so transfer your data to the new hard drive.
