My computer does not recognize my 1TB WD external hard drive anymore?

Q. Here's my dilemma.

I just bought a 1TB Western Digital "Clickfree" external hard drive. It's been working fantastic for the whole week until today.

When I first plugged it in windows picked up the device because I heard the sound that Windows 7 makes when up plug a USB device into it.

The drive would not show up in My computer but when I unplugged it for a split second the drive appeared and just as fast disappeared. I am pretty knowledgeable with computers with the work that I do but i have never had this problem before.

I have 2 programs that I use frequently. EASEUS Partition Master and EASEUS Data Recovery Wizard. I used both of these programs to investigate this issue. Here are my results.

I found that the partition program was picking up on the drive. It even found all the files in the files in the preview drive application. I could open each individual folder and confirmed each file.

I tried to run a data recovery on the drive with the recovery wizard and after searching for over an hour it came up with next to nothing. It found 3.56GB of files out of 118GB and the ones that it did recover were all corrupt.

I looked in my disk management and it sees my WD hard drive, says that the device is working properly, says all drivers are up to date however there is no drive letter assigned.

So, I tried using the partition software again to assign the drive a letter as well as convert it from a primary drive to a logical drive thinking that there may be a problem there. The partition software successfully changed the drive letter and from primary to logical. When I attempted to plug the drive back in it finally picked it up but when I clicked on the drive in my computer it gives me an error telling me that it cannot find the path to the specified device. Now each time I plug it in it gets assigned a new letter even with no other devices plugged in.

So thinking that my last option to fix the hard drive at the cost of my music and movies archive would be to format and try to fix it this way. Before doing so I took it to my friends place to see if his computer could recognize it and it did. I was able to access the files on his computer like I used to be able to do on my own.

Here is a little more specific information about my computer.

Have an MSI Wind u210

- AMD Athlon Neo MV 1.60 Ghz Processor
- 2GB Ram
- Windows 7 Ultimate x64

Just installed Mobile Partner to connect my USB data stick the other day. Both have worked together perfectly for several days now. But I did notice the problem immediately after using the data stick and unplugging it.

Jet Audio installed today, may have been playing a track saved on the external hard drive and went to sleep or the cord may have come unplugged.

The external hard drive uses USB 3.0 interface and my computer used USB 2.0.

Anyone have any ideas? I can't think of any more relevant information at the moment. I'd love to be able to fix the problem without having to restore my computer tonight. That is my last option. I've read that a lot of people are having the same problem with 1TB WD external hard drives.

Sorry that this is so lightly and thanks for answering.

Kindest Regards,

A. Sounds like your WD 1 TB drive is going bad I had that same Issue with mine so i returned it and bought a Seagate 1.5 TB at wal-mart for around $70 it's call the Freeagent Desk. you should look into WD has had issues with their 1 TB drives.

Does Texas have a plan for peak Oil?
Q. below are numbers and a link stating the importance of conventional and non-conventional oil to their economy.

"In terms of economic value trickled down through the Texas economy and jobs created, this figure equates to nearly $110 billion and 719,115 jobs"

www.beg.utexas.edu/UTopia/images/pagesizemaps/oilgas.pdf

A. The Texas Bureau of Economic Geology probably does more research related to peak oil and enhanced oil recovery than any other organization in the United States, including the USGS.
http://www.beg.utexas.edu/#

Proven reserves of natural gas in Texas are at an all-time high, now at 85 Trillion cubic feet. They are not likely to be near the peak as many new discoveries in Texas are still being proven by the drillbit, such as the Eagle Ford shale, the Bossier Shale, the Bone Spring and Avalon Shales, and others. Texas averages 838,000 bbls of oil per day at present, and oil production in Texas has been on an upward trend since 2005.

The research at BEG is funded by income from the oil properties that are owned by the Permanent University Fund lands and the Trust Minerals in the state of Texas, along with Federal grants, and research grants provided by private industry. The BEG operates many research consortia that are funded by industry members who pay hundreds of thousands of dollars per year to belong to the research programs and to have immediate access to the results. Companies world-wide belong to these consortia at BEG and help fund research there.

Peak oil is likely to generate more funds for Texas rather than fewer. As oil prices rise in response to peak oil it becomes more economic to produce oil from many more sources than are economic at today's oil prices. The numbers of workers involved could possibly rise as well, as higher prices mean oil companies can spend more money on drilling, on secondary and tertiary recovery mechanisms, and on better equipment. Many old Texas oil fields are likely to be redrilled, worked over and recompleted as oil prices rise in response to peak oil. Many parts of Texas employ large numbers of professionals in the oil industry that provide support for operations all over the world for most of the world's major oil companies. Even Saudi Aramco has offices in Texas.

Currently there is a trend towards foreign oil companies investing in Texas oil fields because they see considerable future potential there. CNOOC (a Chinese oil company) recently spent $1.1 billion to partner with Chesapeake in the Eagle Ford. Statoil (Norway) and Talisman (Canada) invested $1.3 billion in the Eagle Ford. Shell (Netherlands) recently invested $1 billion in the Eagle Ford which was paid to one rancher for the right to drill his south Texas acreage. Reliance Industries (India) invested $1.3 Billion in its Eagle Ford acreage.

According to the Texas Railroad Commissioner, who regulates the oil industry in Texas, the oil industry contributes over $200 Billion to the state's economy.

A. Download and install free undelete programs (links provided below) like PC Inspectors File Recovery, TestDisk & PhotoRec 6.3, Undelete Plus, FreeUndelete, Recuva, etc. I've used PC Inspector and was successful in recovering the files that were deleted.

Just keep in mind that you must not install these programs or configure it to put temporary and recoverd files in the drive you want to recover files from.

If all else fails and the data are really important to you, contact a trusted data recovery firms like Ontrack which will charge you fees but will give desirable results.
