Q. My Laptop has been acting funky for the past few days and now I think it's getting bad.

I turn it on and goes to the screen where I choose which profile I want to go into then when I choose the profile it says Welcome then it says Logging Off.This keeps happening every time I choose my profile(Owner).

It's a Vista
Please Help Me
It doesn't even let me in.

A. This needs hands-on help. You need to decide whether you'll do it yourself or go to a Repair Shop.

Here's how to find one. Go to Google and type in something like:
computer repair ny,ny
and the search result will be something like this:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=computer+repair+ny%2Cny&aq=f&oq=

I chose NY, NY because I knew I'd get hits there. You should put your own town name and state there. Or pick a close-by larger town or city. Depending on where you are, the repair should cost you from $80-150.

Otherwise, if you try it yourself, the first thing to do is read up on your options here:
http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Windows/en-US/Help/f768809f-ed90-415f-a83f-89b42108b3551033.mspx#EFF

Probably you will use the System Recovery Options Menu available through your Windows installation disk:
http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Windows/en-US/help/326b756b-1601-435e-99d0-1585439470351033.mspx
In addition to Startup Repair, try to run a file system check (chkdsk) and fix the boot sector (bootcfg).

If you've tried everything in System Recovery Options, and it still doesn't work, use another computer to get a copy of something like Knoppix, or BART:
http://knopper.net/knoppix-mirrors/index-en.html
... and burn the image to a CD. Then boot to that CD so you can get your data copied from your hard drive to a USB hard drive. Then reinstall.
How?

As you can see, this is a lengthy and techie issue to solve, so I recommend you get a pro to do it. But it's up to you. Good luck!

how to add old HD with data in XP. Need to recover files,BIOS & device manager see old HD but disk manager not
Q. Old HDD is corrupted so is not booting even with recovery cd, but mechanically is OK. I can't format it before retrieving files. I was advised to install new HD and use old HD as slave in desktop. XP Home ed is not seeing it, so when I search for my files I get no result. Please help

A. If you haven't thrown out the old unit you should either attach it as a slave hard drive on the new unit or if you need the data on the drive consider a company I have worked with before.
They are based in New York city , NY called
Sherlock Data Recovery Services.

They have a we site at : www.sherlockdatarecovery.com

I belive you can just send in the drive to them and they return to you a free USB drive with all the data from your original hard drive.
There are other data recovery services that also may help you but I found most of those to be a rip off. Only Sherlock was able to recover the data without first charging me an arm and a leg. You may want to give them a try.

Like I said you can try to add your corrupted drive as a a slave. I don't know if you have NTFS or FAT32 as the filesystem but you should be able to mount it. I do not mean boot it up just recogize it as a slave disk. The disk manufacturer typically has a jumper that needs to be set to enable the hard drive as a slave disk drive.

Hope that helps!
