Hard Drive failure? Data safe in the hands of Ontrack Data recovery without being reported to the law?

Q. Okay, so my hard drive crashed, I sent it in for repairs, it got replaced by a new one, but I really really need my data back. the failed hard drive was sent for repairs, thing is, I have a load of secret data(no, not porn, more like games that I really don't wanna lose) that I don't want anyone to see, will my data be safe and my privacy secured, and no chances of me being submitted to the law?

A. confusing question but i will do my best. ok if you sent your hd out and they replaced it then the data is gone. you will never get that back. as far as stuff you had saved on your old hd. they don't care about music and movie downloads but are required to report any illegal images such as child porn or anything deemed as a national security threat I.E saved emails to osama bin laden. as long as you are not a sicko or a terrorist you should be fine.

how can I recover my files from a hard disc?
Q. I was surfing on the net, suddenly my laptop shut down. There was no way to restore it so I formatted and repartitioned it. Is there a free software that can guarantee me to recover my old files before formating??
please the one who doesn't know how to deal with such problems let him not answer my question.
I really need your help... please help and get 10 points.

A. You state: "There was no way to restore it so I formatted and repartitioned it." If this is what you REALLY did, then it is very unlikely you will find anything for free which will recover anything. You can try a search for an unformat program at http://www.download.com or http://www.tucows.com and see what turns up. Both sites have a wealth of free and shareware programs available. The problem is when you formatted the disk after repartitioning it, you wrote over the old directory with a new blank directory. In essence, if you think of this like a map, you erased all of the street names. The contents of the rest of the disk may still be there, but you no longer have the street directions to locate anything. There are some commercial programs which can make a decent stab at recovering information. Ontrack Systems sells a very good package I've used before. However, even though a program can reconstruct files to some extent, MOST will only be partially recovered. A computer forensic specialist can recover more but the tools he would use cost thousands of dollars. The hard part about recovery is fragmented files. There is no way to locate all of the pieces or to even know how many pieces the file was split into once the directory information is wiped, so each fragment ends up being recovered as a separate file and then you get to go through each and piece the file back together by hand, which is rather tedious, but if something like a plain text file can be done. And since all of the file names were erased, the recovered files are all simply numbered in the sequence recovered starting with the first sector of data. A graphic image file in pieces would be almost impossible to piece back together. Still, try a search at the sites I listed above and see what you can find. Good luck in this but I would not be very optimistic about recovering anything you can use. And for next time, invest in a decent hard disk backup program and make sure it works...

Urgent!! How to recover the data from the drive after accidentally formastting it.?
Q. I lost my data due to formatting a partition of my disk, while recovering it, the software is able to recover almost whole data but the problem is that it has made hundreds of folders and put the data in them. And in a folder containing files and folders the folders are empty, there data is in some other folders. for eg. one such folder contains the setup of a software, but the folders like data, sound etc. are empty. It not possible to manually search and restore the contents of every folders. Is there any software which can directly restore the lost data to the drive in the same hiericichal order as they were before. Its very urgent. Reply if u hav used any data recovery s/w.

A. I have faced the same problem many times , as my clients generally bring, and i usually recover it with
