How do I do a Complete System Restore?

Q. I've got an old desktop (like 2002 old, truly ancient) that I want to do a complete system restore on. I don't have any data that I want to keep or anything, so I want to return it to the way it was when it was initially purchased. I did the system restore normally, but it didn't do anything. I plan on giving it away, so would like to do a complete system restore first. Any tips are appreciated. Thanks guys!

A. Reinstall the operating system. The computer is too old to have a recovery partition that you could use.
System restore only takes you back in time to a date where a restore point was created. System recovery takes the computer back to when it was new.

How many times can you do system restore on a computer?
Q. I'm having to do a system restore due to a wifi connection problem on my Acer. How many times can you do a system restore on a computer because I'm sure this will not be the only time this task will have to be preformed? Or am I limited to the number of times I can do it? Is this the same with all computers?

A. Are you restoring from a saved point in time or from the recovery discs that you made?
If it is to a saved point in time then I think the once.
If it is from the recovery media you made when new then so long as your system is working it is like installing an OS only it is the same one and most of the information is in the settings from the start.
Some makers have a limit on the number of times that you can use the HDD restore data but that information will be in the info from the maker in the warranty and bumph etc

How can I system restore my computer to the day I bought it?
Q. I go into system restore and I don't have a restore point for when I bought the computer (2yrs ago, also using XP). I realize I need a restore point, but a friend of mine got a bad virus and restored his to day one (he had his for a year, and has XP), so I know I can do it. Is there any possible way for me to take it back to factory settings?

He said he pressed Ctrl-F8 or something at bootup, won't work for me. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks.
I have a custom computer, it's not a certain brand. XP came pre-installed, and it didn't come with a restore CD. So I'm not sure what to do, other than call the people, but I don't want to pay for a CD they should've given me in the first place.

A. Using System Restore to go back to "factory date" and condition is imposable.

System Restore only back-ups certain important system files and keeps them for a short period of time. It doesn't completely return your computer to just-out-of-the-box condition.

Depending on the manufacture of your computer, you will need to do a System RECOVERY using the supplied recovery disks or a hidden hard drive partition.

Or you may need to do a full REFORMAT and re-install of your Windows operating system using a Windows install disk.

Just be forewarned, using either Recovery or Reformat will cause the lose of all your data and any programs that you may have downloaded.
