How do I get files from my not-working hard drive?

Q. My external hard drive is working, it's just that the cord that goes from the external to my computer won't plug in right. I already got it replaced once, and they say they can't do data recovery, so there's no use in sending it in. Do you think I could take it to a local computer store and have them try to extract the files some how, and then I can get my hard drive replaced?

A. if its just the port on the drive thats damaged, a local computer shop MAY be able to get it to work temporarily enough to copy information off... If its an external drive, most of those use standard PC and laptop hard drives inside, and can be very easy for any computer tech to pull the info off.

if not, then the only option is to go to a data recovery expert, but they can be UNGODLY expensive. They have clean rooms set up, and disect the drive, and move the platters over to a new housing

Calling all data recovery experts, replacing circuit board on a hard drive do I need hermetically sealed room?
Q. Having called Seagate I was told I could not purchase a circuit board, so if need be I will just use an identical drive (which I have) but would prefer not to, so if I can do this myself how do I get one, I cannot see why I would logically need a hermetic seal, the board is clearly visible, and particulates would potentially be able to both get around it and a select few, through it, so if I do, please explain why.

A. As the above poster said, a clean room isn't required for PCB swaps. A clean room is only needed when you're working with the disk internals. Keep in mind though that a PCB swap isn't a magical fix; it won't always fix the drive. Some boards also require you swap the CPU and/or ROM between boards and swapping the entire board won't help.

can you watch video clips & view photos on the internet, and not be able to retrieve them on your hard drive?
Q. i saw more than once videos and pictures of child porn on my computer, ex wants visitation for my 3 year old girl. i need to prove to the courts he watches young porn. brought computer to data recovery expert, they found nothing. how is this possible when i saw it with my very own eyes? he is not smart enough to know how to erase them from the hard drive. help.

A. They never download, the streaming is not saved locally anywhere. The sites visited might be stored in his internet cache though.
