where can I find inexpensive hard drive data recovery in the San Francisco Bay Area?

Q.

A. Be careful when dealing with cheaper data recovery 'labs'. Most of those places will do far more harm than good. That said there are three major data recovery labs in the US and they are Drivesavers, Gillware and OnTrack. If someone else has mucked with the drive before they receive it, it will cost twice as much -- if they can recover anything. These labs will evaluate the drive for free before beginning any work. Of the three listed Gillware is known to be the best priced.

Recovery data in a crashed hardrive?
Q. The hardrive was crashed. I have tried to use a recovery disc , Mini PC , to get the data but I could not because the system could not detect the hardrive. Any body know other recovery software or any store ( in Bay area , California ) can help .
Thanks and very appreciate your answer

A. this is just a common situation that you lose data in a crashed hard drive.
Follow the following steps and you can get back your lost data:
1. Do not save any new file to this hard drive.
2. Download recovery software, recommended one is Wondershare Data Recovery (because I used it and it helped me get back all my data back)
http://www.data-recovery-utilities.com/data-recovery.html
3. Install and open Wondershare Data Recovery . Remember not to install this software in the hard disk where your lose data has located.Select the disk which has lost data, and click 'Next' button.
4. Just follow the recovery wizard then you can get back your data.

Notes:
you can specify a target folder, which means you don't need to scan all the data on the disk. it can save you much time and energy.
you can also preview your data to check if all the data you need are recoverable and to evaluate the recovery quality before you buy.
Good Luck!

Are there any places that will fix my portable hard drive or at least recover my files? PLEASE HELP!?
Q. Hi, I posted this question about a week ago but haven't gotten the response I was searching for. I have a portable hard drive that all of a sudden stopped working. I have plugged it in numerous computers through the USB port and the computers will not read the hard drive. I have tried trouble shooting the hard drive with no success also and have done everything I possibly can to get it to work. Are there any places such as Geek Squad or any other company that does this kind of work and may be able to get my hard drive to read? Most people have told me to try to fix it myself, I know it will save me a ton of money, but I have tried, and I cannot fix it. Please HELP! By the way, I live in the bay area, CA.

A. Are you sure that it is the hard drive? It could be the external enclosure that is the problem. I had an external drive that suddenly stopped working. I opened the case and discovered that the data cable inside the case had worked it's way off of the pins on the hard drive. I plugged the cable back in and it worked fine for about 6 months and the same thing happened again. I fixed it again and that fix lasted 6 months also. I finally broke down and spent $20 for a new one. I pulled the drive out of the first case and put it in the new case. It has worked flawlessly ever since. Your situation may be different but I thought that I would throw that out there.

Does your drive make strange clicking or grinding noises? can you feel it spinning. If the drive is damaged physically you may need to send it to a data recovery house and they are not cheap. Don't waste your time with the Geek Squad or their competitors. They will charge you a bunch of money and do nothing more than you've done already. Then they'll send it to a data recovery house and add a few more bucks for doing so.

I can't recommend any one data recovery house but there are plenty of them out there. Do a search on Google for "Data Recovery" but be advised that these places charge anywhere from $500 - $2,000 for their services.

Good Luck,
Captain Computer
