Q. I just want to know if there is a way for me to at least recover my data, it's the only thing I care about. I was planning on buying a new computer anyway.
I don't have a recovery disc.
I don't have a recovery disc.
A. Many new PCs and Laptops sold in recent years come with a very useful recovery partition (sometimes called a restore partition or factory reset tool). Should your main installation of Windows 7 stop working, you can use this partition to quickly restore your laptop to the same state that it was when you first bought the computer. What computer make do you have? Find the right key to press the moment you turn on the computer here:
http://www.techsupportforum.com/forums/f108/laptop-recovery-instructions-162525.html
Warning: Resetting the computer will also erase all data that is saved in your drive C. This is why I discourage users to store data on the same drive where the OS and applications are located. Data should always be in a separate partition so whenever you need to reset the computer to factory settings, they won't be affected.
Perhaps you don't need to totally reset the computer. Maybe you just need to repair the boot files. If you don't have a Windows 7 installer disc, a System Repair disc might do. Is there another Windows 7 computer in the house? Click on Start > All Programs > Maintenance > Create a System Repair disc. The computer should have the same version (32 or 64-bit) regardless of the edition. Boot from the disc and do a Startup repair.
If Startup repair won't fix it, it's time to back up your data. Prepare this Hiren's Bootable CD:
http://www.hirensbootcd.org/download/
Here's the direct download link:
http://www.hirensbootcd.org/files/Hirens.BootCD.15.1.zip
Extract the zipped file to a temporary folder and run the BurnToCD command to transfer the contents to a blank CD.
You can also transfer the bootable CD to a USB flash drive using this 3rd party program:
http://www.pendrivelinux.com/yumi-multiboot-usb-creator/
Boot from the CD or flash drive. Make sure your BIOS is set to boot from either of these media before going to the hard drive. Select Hiren's Boot CD and run Mini Windows XP from the menu. This will allow you to access the contents of your hard drive and save them to an external device.
Once you have saved your data, you may proceed with the factory reset.
If factory reset won't work as the recovery partition may have been erased or corrupted too, your next option is to buy a set of recovery discs from the computer manufacturer. They usually charge $25-40. That's the easiest way.
Another option that is also easy to do is to get hold of a Windows 7 installer DVD and install a fresh copy of the OS. You don't need to buy a new Windows 7 license if you still have the product key written on the sticker at the back of the computer. I hope it is still readable. Otherwise, you will need to extract the key that is saved in the hard drive using the Product Key Finder program inside the Mini Windows XP.

Has anyone any ideas about how to reveal some hidden data after removing Windows Recovery virus?
Q. I managed to remove the virus with the aid of bleeping computer. The bleeping computer screen advised me to use Unhide, exe which I did. No luck. It told me to temporarily turn off any security/ virus protection I had and run Unhide again, which I did.
The virus appears to be gone and now I can see my desktop again. However, My desktop background is still missing and , more importantly, my start menu list of programmes is invisible. Has anyone any suggestions about how I can get these back?
