Q. I had made one of my folders and its content encrypted by changing the âEncrypt Contents to Secure Dataâ checkbox in the advanced option of General Tab in properties of my folder. After Iâve reinstalled my Windows, I can not access to that folder again. What can I do?
A. You might not be able to access it unless you backed up your personal certificates before reinstalling Windows or you specified a "recovery agent." (No idea what exactly a recovery agent is.)
"How files are encrypted
Files are encrypted through the use of algorithms that essentially rearrange, scramble, and encode the data. A key pair is randomly generated when you encrypt your first file. This key pair is made up of a private and a public key. The key pair is used to encode and decode the encrypted files.
If the key pair is lost or damaged and you have not designated a recovery agent, and then there is no way to recover the data.
Why you must back up your certificates
Because there is no way to recover data that has been encrypted with a corrupted or missing certificate, it is critical that you back up the certificates and store them in a secure location. You can also specify a recovery agent. This agent can restore the data. The recovery agent's certificate serves a different purpose than the user's certificate."

No idea if there are any 3rd party tools that could try to decrypt the files/folders, but if there are that process might take a long time.

What's the best external hard drive out there that will not lose any personal data whatsoever?
Q. I'm running out of space on my pc and I need to know what's the best external hard drive that is portable, has lots of memory, cheap, will always work, and will not lose any personal data from the external hard drive. Some of the known external hard drives are like seagate free agent, transcend iomega, western digital, and lacie. If you know any RELIABLE known external hard drives, please write a well structured detail description of it. Thank you.
A. Check out the ioSafe Solo: http://www.iosafe.com/3
This external hard drive is virtually indestructible - it's fireproof, waterproof, and can be bolted down to prevent theft. Despite backup efforts, if you have a house fire or flood, you're pretty much hooped with a typical hard drive. With the ioSafe, in addition to its disaster-proof features, your data is safe. If something does happen to your hard drive, you can send it back to the company - at their expense - and they will attempt to recover your data and, if they can't, will spend up to $1000 for a third-party recovery service to do it. Once your data is recovered, ioSafe will send it back to you, along with a new hard drive.
I just got an ioSafe Solo and I love it. I'm extremely happy with the services and features this baby offers. :-)
Good luck!

My yahoo account has been hacked. The hacker deleted all my contacts and most emails. How can I recover them?
Q. The hacker deleted all my contacts, all my sent and draft emails and the majority of my inbox emails. I've been using my yahoo account since 2002 so a lot of the data he deleted was very important to me, and I need to recover them. Please show me how. Many thanks.
A. FIRST, check that the alternate e-mail address/mobile phone number is still yours, under Options, Mail Options, Account Information, but then change the alternate address, so the hacker will not be notified of the change! Check the 'Reply To:' address, Vacation Response and other linked Mail accounts as well to be sure they are still yours. Check and delete any Contacts, accounts and linked social networking sites you do not recognize.
Then change both your password AND your secret questions and answers. Make the password a long, strong one with mixed characters! Length = Strength for passwords! Start with a sentence and make substitutions with numbers, symbols and punctuation. Go to "Update password-reset info" to change your Secret Questions and Answers. Make sure they are unchangeable, unique, and easy for you to remember. For a Yahoo account, you can change your password at https://edit.yahoo.com/config/change_pw. If you can no longer access your account, you can get a new password at https://edit.yahoo.com/forgotroot/.

If the contents of the account were deleted, act NOW! There is only 48 hours for recovery of the mail, and there are no guarantees. (24 hours has a better chance of success) The Restore Help form depends on the mail you use:
Read these Yahoo Help pages first for details. The second reference is steps to take before requesting a 'Restore' - do read it!

First, for Mail, there is a Live chat or E-mail chat with Yahoo tech support, for free. Click the Help tab, then at the bottom click Customer Care. Click the cartoon conversation bubble for a Live Chat with Customer Support, although the lines are often busy, so be patient. Or use the envelope icon to e-mail with a description of your problem.
The Restore mail pages depend on the version of mail you use:
Classic Mail: http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/mail/classic/mail_restore.html
Regular Mail: http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/mail/yahoomail/mail_restore.html
OR: Click Contact Us on the Help page, and sign in. Click the Yahoo! Mail Restore Help Form and fill it out.
NOTE: That request will delete all e-mails in the Inbox since the 'Restore' date, so keep moving these to another folder, forward to another e-mail address, or read and delete ...
Check the Spam folder if there is no reply in your Inbox from a Yahoo! Technical Support Agent.
*** A restore returns your account to the time you specify, which means that ALL messages, including instant messages and email messages, received after that time are deleted and cannot be retrieved!
If you need to restore your Yahoo! Address Book (Contacts), please fill out the following restoration form and one of the Yahoo! Address Book agents will attempt to restore your Yahoo! Address Book. This is only possible for 10 days but is definitely worth a try.

or, click Help on the mail page, then Contact Customer Care. The Live Chat button takes a few seconds to show up, but it will. If not, wait and refresh the page (F5). Use the cartoon dialogue bubble for Live Chat, and the envelope icon for e-mail. The e-mail response is often only a few hours!
