Is it possible to restore the data of a hard drive that crashed?

Q. I have a macbook, and recently my hard drive crashed. I lost everything, I lost photos, documents, videos, and all my music. Is it possible to restore the data from it? What stores can help me with that? Does it cost a lot of money? Where should I go and who should I ask for help. This is really important to me, so give me all the information you know please.
Thanks!

I don't know if this will work on a mac, to recover files > from BIOS you can boot portable linux mint 9 from a 2 GIG USB pen drive.

Download and install Unetbootin: http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/ software, click drop down box and download Linux mint 9 to same place on pen drive, In the unetbooting GUI top java script box select the ISO you have just downloaded>OK>reboot.
You will now have an operating system that you can boot form your USB pen to access all you files.
Boot your computer press f2, f8, f10 or f11 to go into BIOS and tell BIOS to boot from external device, save changes.
Make sure the USB pen drive is plugged in.
You will be able to access your files and save them to another device.

How to restore hard drive from created backup Recovery Discs?
Q. I created Recovery discs to backup my hard drive. I was prompted to create a set of five discs but some error prevented me from creating the last one. Hope that won't show to be an issue later.

Now, my system crashed and I need to get all my data back, but am unsure of the steps to take to do so from the recovery discs. Can you tell me how and anything things else I might need to know? Thanks so much!

A. Did you put the first recovery disc in the cd/dvd drive & reboot the computer & see if it allows you to boot off the cd? If nothing happens then you will need to go into the bios & see if its set to boot the cd first then the hard drive.

If this is set correctly, then you probably didn't make the boot cd. Since you had an error, its possible you will still have issues.

How can i recover data from a crashed hard drive?
Q. Ran the test for windows, and im getting the message "no bootable drive found". All my data is still on the computer - i have loads of homework and music on that thing and i really dont want to lose it. I am on a laptop btw too.

I have at my disposal: Another computer (desktop with windows as well) and an external hard drive (250GB)

Is there some way i can get my data back (for free, haha)??

Thanks so much!!

A. Unless you can spin it up and mount it as an accessible file system, you are looking at a costly data recovery effort.

Does the disk device show up at all in the BIOS or POST messages? If you can see the device, maybe just the MBR (master boot record) is corrupted (which means you could potentially recover this).
