How do i remove spyware and virus without doing a system recovery and deleting all my files?

Q. So I am pretty sure I have viruses and spyware on my computer because of endless pop ups, some of my applications randomly get deleted, and my computer has been slow. I downloaded the 90 day trial of mcafee and when it scanned my computer it did not detect anything. So what cam i do to remove the viruses without deleting my data?

A. Update and use your own antivirus or download one of the antivirus tools below and along with the spyware doctor and update them and restart your computer in safe mode ( tap F-8) during startup and select safe mode, then scan with the antivirus and the spyware doctor while in safe mode, this should find it so you can remove it; Please note that you should only run one antivirus on your computer at one time,,

How to remove a computer virus form a used laptop?
Q. I bought my daughter a used Dell Inspiron 1420 from a pawn shop and it has virus (which Im guessing is why it was at the pawn shop, Lol) Ive tried to restore factory settings by hitting F8 and going into the boot menu. But when I select the repair option, the computer just starts normally. At some point the screen started switching colors and all these colored bars were going across the screen. Clearly a virus. Id really prefer not to take it somewhere to get fixed. And of course it did not come with a start up cd. Ive run spybot s&d for the adaware and ive installed avast but none of that has helped with this virus. If I could use some free software to get rid of this thing that would be great. I don't mind paying a little bit if Its something I KNOW is going to work. Any HELPFUL suggestions would be great. I could return the laptop, but Id rather try to remove the virus before I do that. Thanks.

Btw: Its running Vista. Not sure about all the specs as I bought it for a child so, I didnt need anything too fancy. Also, I think the virus may have something to do with IE bc it keeps crashing. Ive started using Firefox which is better but flash keeps crashing in there. Thanks!
The colored bars weren't a hardware issue. It was very obviously bad graphics someone created as part of this virus. Thanks for that first answer but it wasn't very helpful as it seems you didn't read all of my original question. You suggested things Ive already tried and asked about the cd Ive already said wasn't included. o_0

A. You can try Microsoft Defender Offline:

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows/what-is-windows-defender-offline

It makes a bootable CD or USB drive that you use to scan the hard disk for malware. The problem with running anti-malware programs from an infected computer is that the malware can disable the anti-malware program itself! So make the bootable CD/USB drive on a good computer and then use it on the infected laptop.

There's also Microsoft Safety Scanner which works in similar way:

http://www.microsoft.com/security/scanner/en-us/default.aspx

This one looks for viruses instead of malware. Most people think a 'virus' is the same as malware, but they are different and the methods of protecting against them are different.

There are other free utilities out there that work the same way.

If you give up, run a factory restore and that will put the operating system back where it was when the computer was new so the virus will be gone. The factory puts a restore partition on the laptop so you don't need the recovery disks. All of the data stored on the laptop will also be gone, which is a drawback for most people but you would probably prefer the old data to be removed along with the virus.

How to remove antivirus8 when take me in a loop back to the window recovery screen after I try to start?
Q. I have the antivirus 8 on my notebook Windows 7. I have tried start my computer in the 3 different safe modes and normally but it then takes me to a blue screen that tell me I have the problem for a couple sceonds and back to the Windows recovery screen. I am in a loop, so I can't get access to the internet to down load any cure. Any ideas?

A. You need to use a different computer to download Malwarebytes. Then just follow the Automated Removal Instructions in the link. This virus is a super pain the ass to get rid of. A friend's computer had the virus and I was able to get rid of it in about an hour. I did, howerver, spend about two hours trying to completely remove it from my gf's computer. I ended up giving up and just reformating and re-installing windows and all the programs. I had previously formatted the hard drive into two partitions, an OS/programs one and a data one. So it was easy and only took like an hour and a half, which was less time than I spent trying to remove that piece of trash from her computer in the first place.

If you have seperate partitions for data and everthing else then I would advise this if you can't easily get it off your computer.
