Q. I have 2 FZ190s with NVIDIA GeForce 8400M. I believe NVIDIA admitted to a problem in 2008. Despite foot-dragging, I think Sony is admitting to NVIDIA problems as of 8/2009. If my read is correct, the problem contributes to tremendous overheating of the laptop which in turn occasionally causes Blue Screen of Death crashes in Vista.
Can one live with this safely? I have my laptop hiked up off the desk with a fan blowing to help remove the heat.
If we need to fix this, does one have to mail the laptop in to Sony-San Diego for a 7-10 day fix? Or, is this easily fixable at reasonable cost locally? What would need to be bought and replaced/installed?
My laptop is my lifeblood. Mailing it off to the other side of the US for over a week is pretty onerous, not even factoring in the need to remove confidential data.
Any helpful suggestions?

A. Hello Everyone,
This is my first post. I chose to post this in the NVIDIA forum as I think that the problem I am having lies with the NVIDIA graphics card/Video Card.
I have a Sony Vaio VGN-FZ21Z which has been working without any faults for 16 months. My warranty ran out four months ago. Last week, for no apparent reason the graphics began to get distorted.
This happens as soon as I turn on my laptop. Sometimes I see the Sony Vaio logo first then the graphics go awry. On other occasions it starts with the windows error recovery window asking if I want to proceed in safe mode or to start windows normally. I have tried both safe mode and the latter and the graphics are distorted in both modes.
I have tried updating the NVIDIA drivers, and it said that the software for my device is up to date. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers but no joy. Now there is a yellow exclamation mark showing up next to NVIDIA drivers in the Device Manager. The device status reads:
Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)
I try to update but it still says the software is up to date. I have no NVIDIA control panel showing up in the overall control panel. Thatâs just disappeared⦠weird.
Lately, the graphics fuzziness starts and then my computer just turns to black before switching itself off. It has a tendancy to overheat and I can hear the fan working really hard, I hope it hasnât fried the graphics card. I am not into gaming but I do use adobe premiere and dreamweaver programs which tend to work up the heat.
So I would like to ask if anyone has experienced this. Or if anyone has any advice on what my problem could be. I feel that my graphics card has burned out, it is built into the motherboard. I called the repair shop, they told me that it would cost £850 to get the motherboard replaced on this particular model and the best thing would be for them to repair it.

Recover Data from crashed HDD?
Q. I am in the process of upgrading my laptop to a new SSD, but just as i was backing up (with Time Machine), the usb hdd got disconnected and is now failing to mount in OSX. Due to the reduced size of my new SSD, the backups had some old files that I would like to recover if possible, that are not currently on my computer. Can anyone suggest some preferably free drive recovery software? It will ideally recover the backup files so i can put them on either another usb drive, or simply fix the file system on the messed up drive so OSX and time machine can access them again.
Thanks!
Thanks!
A. if near san diego get those mexciano - good in IT to help put it right. much much cheaper than the service centre
