How to recover MS Windows data after Linux install corrupted windows partition?

Q. I installed OpenSuse Linux 11.1 on my hard drive, and the installer set aside a large chunk of the hard drive for windows. After installing linux and restarting, windows was no longer a boot option (under grub). Also, the partition for windows was no longer readable. I tried to recover the data using data recovery software without any luck. From another windows machine the recovery software says that it cannot read the data.

A. I think what happened was that grub missed adding windows to the boot options. Here is a link to do that. It will not affect anything on the windows partition. Even though the instructions are written for ubuntu they will work for grub in general.
This is assuming that windows and suse are on the same drive, called /dev/hda, windows is hda1 and suse hda2 and above. You will also need your password for suse.
Line 4 first makes a backup copy of the file just in case and the second line will open a window where you can edit the file.
Add the suggested lines to the file, review to check for errors and save the file.
On reboot you should have both options for operating system (I hope)
Good luck

How much does it cost to recover about 150GB of data from a hard drive that is malfunctioning?
Q. I have a Seagate 300GB hard drive, recently my PC stopped recognizing it and it made a strange grinding noise when it was on. I haven't got the first clue on how to access the drive. I heard data recovery was outrageously priced. But I'm just trying to get a ball park figure.

A. Yes it usually is very expensive. But try installing this drive as a second drive on another system, see if it recognized and see if you can access it there. Also, search teh web, there are some tools availabe that can do magic stuff with defective drives. Good luck!

How to recover data from a failing Macbook hard drive?
Q. My macbook is from 2008, and the hard drive finally decided to start failing on me. I didn't back up anything. Is there anyway to get the data from that drive without having to go to some data recovery service?

A. Depends on the OS version - u should be able to boot from a system disk - which can be created with boot camp - but best bet is to buy an external HD caddy - u can get them very cheap on ebay and put ur old drive in it and get ur data off it that way by plugging it into another MAC - or should have bought a pc and then u could have got the data back in 2 mins - lol - ah well each to there own!!
