What do you need to run a web server or a website of your computer?

Q. I want to know what you need to run a web server or website off of a computer and how to set one up. I don't wnat anything extreme just a basic web or website (I don't know proper terminology) server.

A. Any computer, add more hard drives for space,
server software, and max out the RAM that the motherboard will support!

If you talk performance, it is still the same things just more of it.

Better server = larger case that supports over eight hard drives, motherboard that supports dual/quad/2 or 4 CPUs. Redundant power supply. Cooling fans to keep inside of case cool.

Your software: Operating System = Server Software, Web creation software, application software, router, two network cards, Back up server - so, where do you want to go, it is up to your pocket book.

How do i boot my computer from a USB flash drive?
Q. I've looked into my BIOS and i do not have a boot from USB option. There is a boot from floppy option but i don't have a floppy drive on this computer. By the way, i bought this computer last year.

A. use this software

What does re-installing windows actually do concerning the hard-drive?
Q. If you reinstall windows, does it automatically clear out your hard-drive? Or is clearing your hard-drive a different task altogether?

My friend is considering a re-install, but it's no good if the hard-drive isn't cleared.

A. I've found that even after re-installing Windows; sometimes the new install is "aware" that there was a previous version on the drive (presents you with multiple OS boot options, etc.). If I'm dealing with a system that has been compromised by some sort of malware, I always follow the principal of "nuke and pave".

1. Backup the files you want to keep to some sort of removable or remote media (DVD-R, Carbonite Online Backup, removable USB hard drive, CIFS share on a ReadyNAS, etc). This can be a time consuming but it is a necessary step. You want to avoid data loss AT ALL COSTS.

2. If your computer shipped with re-installation media, you'll need to locate these disks now (CDs or DVDs). Your PC may have shipped with images of the re-install media on a separate partition of the hard drive. If so, you'll likely need to run the "recovery media creation utility" for your PC. This can usually be found under a folder in the "all programs" directory of your start menu. The utility will likely be under a directory that corresponds to the OEM of your system. For example Start Menu > All Programs > Toshiba > Utilities > Recovery Media Creator (or something like that. I'm just using Toshiba as an example). Bottom line, you'll want your files backed up, and your OS recovery CDs (or DVDs) in your hands before you proceed further!

Note: This is also a good time to locate the Windows License Key that goes with your system. Here's where you head off problems related to the following scenario (which I've run into before). "Um, I got this copy of Windows for free from a friend, and I don't know which key he used when he installed it". If Windows didn't come with your PC when you bought it, or if you are using a bootleg (free) copy, then don't bother proceeding. You need to have a licensed copy of Windows with a corresponding License Key in your hands. If you bought Windows from a retailer, the license key will be printed somewhere in the software packaging. If Windows came with your PC, then there will be a sticker with the license key somewhere on the case of your PC or laptop.

3. Use a bootable, 3rd-party drive wiping utility (I think Hirens Boot CD has one included, also checkout the free version of Active Kill Disk) to wipe every sector of the drive. You don't have to do a DoD wipe, you just want to zero the drive. This will likely sound extreme to some folks, but it will eliminate any references to the Windows MBR, and it will destroy any sort of rootkit that may have taken up residence on the hard drive. This too will be time consuming (2+ hours), and the time required depends on the size if the drive you are wiping.

4. Reinstall Windows from the OS installation media (using the valid Windows license key) that you located in step 2.

5. Download and install all relevant drivers and firmware from the website of your PC's manufacturer.

6. Install and update your Antivirus software (AVG Free Edition should work fine for a home user).

7. Run all windows updates (time consuming, but necessary).

8. Reinstall the most recent versions of staple software such as: Adobe Acrobat Reader, Firefox, Java, Quicktime and iTunes, etc.

9. Reinstall your licensed software products (MS Office, QuickBooks, Games, etc). Check for updates to these as well after they are installed.

10. Restore your files from the backup you made in step one.

Good luck!
