A. Before I tell you which one is the best one, I would like to tell you what standard I used to judge and compare software.
the standards are professional function, easy-to-use,compatible to computer's operating system and competitive price.
according to the above standard, My recommend one is Wondershare Data Recovery( because I used it and it works well with nice quality)
it is comprehensive recovery software. It can do partition recovery, format recovery, data recovery, photo recovery photos, and partition.
It supports FAT16, FAT32, NTFS file systems
you can specify a target folder, which means you don't need to scan all the data on the disk. it can save you much time and energy.
you can preview your files before recovery to evaluate the recovery quality.

Is it better to use data recovery softwares or should directly consult data recovery companies?
Q. There are many data recovery companies that offers expensive data recovery services and there are various freeware and affordable softwares in the net. What should a layman prefer?
A. the first thing you should do is to stop putting any new data on your target drive.
then you can try some freeware to see if the data you wanted is still in. and preview to check the recovery quality.
at last you can buy a full version (of course the best on in your opinion after comparing) to recover your data.
Here I recommend one recovery software that I used few days ago.It is on sale-50% discount

If you can not see your data through freeware, you don't need buy a full version. Going to consult data recovery companies is recommended.

Can anyone recommend a data recovery service in New York City?
Q. I am looking for a good data recovery service (preferably in Manhattan) that is neither wildly expensive (preferably below $400), that will not destroy my hard drive. I've heard that bad data recovery services can actually make it impossible for you to ever get your data back. I don't want to lose my data to inexperienced people. Thanks for any advice.
Also, if there is a company that is really good and affordable that I can mail my Hard Drive to, then that might work too.
Thanks!

A. You might want to consider this alternative to having someone else do the work:
If you've got a lot of valuable files that must be recovered, have a look @ 'SpinRite' from GRC.
Does total disk maintenance; checks cable interfaces; many deep disk checks, recovers data & fixes HDD errors; etc.
THE industry standard.
About $90 US; money back if not satisfied.
Money back if not satisfied.
Google for reviews.
Well worth the money.

Works on Mac drives: use Spinrite first, then migrate drive & use the Mac recovery utility on the repaired data.
Does not work with newer "solid state" drives.
