What is the estimated price for external hard drive repair?

Q. It is a Western Digital 500 GB external hard drive. It recently entered the stage where it is no longer recognized by my (or others') computers.

I would like to know the estimated price for repair and just repair, data recovery is not necessary. Also if there are any suggestions on how to repair it myself, that would be greatly appreciated.

I believe it has something to do with the drive not spinning or some other common problem.

A. buy like a $50-$70 new one off amazon.

How to hook up HDD to laptop for data recovery?
Q. i have a 3tb external hdd by western digital. the other day, my computer crashed and since then my hdd has not been working. i took the drive out of the casing and wondering if i can connect it to my laptop's motherboard for data recovery (using an sata adapter). or is this only possible with a desktop computer

A. If the adapter is a USB-to-SATA adapter, yes, and the adapter has to have its own power supply for the bare drive to operate. A 3 terabyte hard drive draws too much power to get the power it needs only from the USB port.

How do i recover my plug and play western digital 320gb hard drive?
Q. my western digital 320 gb plug and play hardrive doesnt detect completly on my computer I tried using the western digital support and it doesnt work. I wanna try using ontrack to do a data recovery my self , how do i do that ???

A. I'm guessing this a USB hard drive?
The first thing you dont want to do is run the western digital
software because it could wipe your data. If the drive is powering up ok and not making any loud noises like the heads banging away on the disks inside then its probably not an issue with the drive its probably an issue with the pc your plugging it into. Did you try a differant USB port and also make sure your plugging it into the PC and not a USB hub, also pug into a port on the back of the PC if its a desktop system. Or if its a notebook your trying to connect it to try a differant port or power down the PC completely and the drive switch it to another port power up the drive and then turn on the pc and see if windows will recognize it then. It might not bring up the wizard so you might want to just look in My Computer and see if the drive shows up in there after windows is loaded. System type and port type would make it easier to diagnose but like I said if the drive is spinning up ok then its probably the pc unless the drive got dropped or something like that it should be fine another thing is it a
3.5inch or a 2.5 inch drive because if it is a 3.5inch you can remove the drive from the external case and plug it in internally if your using a desktop computer but I would try the first thing I mentioned and if that don't work try it internally and if it works that way then the controller board in the external case might be shot.
