Q. My Macbook laptop just recently starting having problems and is no longer recognizing the hard drive for whatever reason. Apple can fix it for me by putting in a new HD but I would very much like to save the files that I know are still stored on the old HD. Does anyone have any recommendations on a good mail away or local (to Northen Virginia) data recovery service? How much is this probably going to cost me?
A. Data recovery is a specialized service, there aren't going to be many local places that have a lab to work on it. Most places will perform a free diagnostic and give you a free quotation. You can probably expect to spend anywhere from $500 - 1400 for software recoveries and $900 - 2200 for hardware recoveries. I've used CBL in the past and them managed to save my data. It was a heads problem and cost me $1500. http://www.cbltech.com
What is a normal/good price for portable hard drive data recovery?
Q. Got to get data from 3 portable hard drives that stopped working properly and I don't want to get ripped off. All three get power and then blink or beep and the computer doesn't recognize them.
Also if anyone knows of a place in Los Angeles I would really appreciate it.

A. It depends on what is wrong with them. I'd guesstimate from $300-1500 a piece from a professional lab. You can compare prices at ontrack, gillware and drivesavers the top 3 data recovery labs and see who comes out cheapest. Generally it will be Gillware though, they also offer free evaluations and have an online estimating tool.
Before you do that you can pull the drives out of their enclosures and try hooking them up directly to a computer or try them in a new enclosure.

I opened a photo from my SD card in Photoshop, edited it, and printed it without saving it. HELP?
Q. My SD card got overwritten by some Norton recovery program. When I use various data recovery programs they only recover photos that I had on there a long time ago (I had deleted them about a month ago and took the new ones - including the one I edited that I need back!) Is there anywhere this photo could have been temporarily saved since it was viewed and printed? I'll try anything! Thanks!
A. files that have been deleted can be recovered by programs but files that have been overwritten can only be recovered in a lab and only if the storage medium is magnetic on an SD card your out of luck
