How do I recover data from a USB flash drive?

Q. I know there is recovery software available, but the problem is that I don't have the USB drive anymore. Is there still anyway to get the data back? I don't think so but I figure it wouldn't hurt to ask...

A. Hi,
sorry but without the flash drive it's gone, and the recovery software most times doesn't work as well, so always backup to disc. sorry to tell you.

folders on my hard drive have been converted to files?
Q. I have a western digital external 1TB usb drive. A load of my folders on the drive have been converted to unknown files that i can't open.

i ran scandisk, but it didnt help.
I have data recovery software, but it would take weeks to scan and recover that much data.

is there a 3rd party scandisk that fixes this sort of thing? or should i send the drive back to WD while its still under warrenty?

A. Send the drive back. The master boot record is shot. Using a product such as Wipe to completely clean the drive might fix it, but if it is still under warranty and you still have the box you should send it back.

USB protected by a utility software and unable to format?
Q. I am trying to create a system recovery USB flash drive, on windows 7. The "error" message says that: DataSafe has detected that the USB key you have selected is protected by a utility software; we are unable to format this key. Is there anything I can do to the NEW $40 16 GB USB ScanDisk to make the program accept it??
Is there any way to do this without linux?

A. i think your datas are protected by some way
i dont know about windows 7 i have used it once or twice it really sucks
i am using XP with linux so if my usb got stuck
i switch to ubuntu
open the external drive and change the file permission
