How do you get data off a hard drive?

Q. Can someone tell me how to get data off a hard drive by taking it out or through a dead computer? Whenever I turn on my computer it make this sound like something been cut inside it and then it turn off. My uncle said that the CPU got fried. If it does can you tell me how to get data off the hard drive?
It make a clicking noise when it abruptly turn off

A. The CPU doesn't make any sounds; just the drives and fans. Perhaps you have a bad fan.

The clicking sounds are the hard drive head trying to search and the head is going bad (probably a spring).
The best thing to do (if you can start it) is to have another backup USB drive attached to the computer and transfer the files directly from the drive to the external hard drive as soon as you can.

If the computer is dead and will not start, then perhaps the drive is already dead. You can try taking out the drive and buying a USB drive enclosure from newegg or tigerdirect, and attach it to another computer to recover the data. If that doesn't work, you will need to contact a hard drive data recovery specialist to recover the data and is not cheap $$$$$ or more.

How valuable is the data to you?

Can you see the contents of an external hard drive after its been unplugged?
Q. I had an external hard drive loaded onto my computer, but it dropped and died. I want to review what was on there (filenames, not contents, obviously) to see if its worth sending to data recovery.

Is there some way to see that? The folders were visible on my computer at one time, and I haven't shut it off or cleared the RAM. Any ideas?

Thanks, I'd really appreciate it.

A. with compupic pro i am being able to do that
but i erases after you disconnect a drive, as an usb memory pof a hard drive.
And cenatek's ramdisk is able to load all of a program into memory, that it means that kind of things its possible.
The problem is how to take data bak from memory to hard disk. Its like when you rise the buffer on winamp, you place a cd, load the winamp buffer (eg. 55000kb) and then expulse the cd and the music still is playing on winamp.
I was looking many time ago a software like that and nothing appears yet.
Someone must be wonking on it at any place but at least someone is doing it, im sorry i can't help more.

What is the estimated price for external hard drive repair?
Q. It is a Western Digital 500 GB external hard drive. It recently entered the stage where it is no longer recognized by my (or others') computers.

I would like to know the estimated price for repair and just repair, data recovery is not necessary. Also if there are any suggestions on how to repair it myself, that would be greatly appreciated.

I believe it has something to do with the drive not spinning or some other common problem.

A. buy like a $50-$70 new one off amazon.
