is it possible to get files off a broken thumb drive?

Q. the files are all my school stuff. i had it on my computer(which crashed) and this thumb drive(which broke) and i didn't get a new computer to transfer the files to yet. :/
the external part of the flash drive, the part that goes into the USB port, broke off the plastic case. Theres three little wires hanging off of the broken piece and a place for a fourth one. i don't plan on fixing it myself, so what are so reliable places to take it to?

A. If it is broken then you might need to see a data recovery company in your area. Yes it is possible to recover data from your usb drive. It may cost you though.
Good luck.

My old computer crashed. Is there any way I can attach a cable to transfefr data files?
Q. My old HP m7557c system crashed. Recovery won't work. Says I am "missing DLL files to load the kernal". I need to transfer data files from the old hard disk to the new laptop. Is there any way I can use a cable to attach the old computer to my new one in order to transfer files (like a thumb drive)?

A. http://www.knoppix.net/

Knoppix is a Linux distro that boots entirely off a CD or DVD but it can then read the disks and everything. I've had to this a whole bunch of times for people.

Burn a Knoppix disc, boot the crashed computer from it. An actual OS will load and you'll have a start menu, web browser, and everything.

Open up the provided file manager, plug in an external hard drive or USB thumb drive and copy all your data from the local discs to the removable device.

Wipe discs on crashed machine and clean install the OS. Put your data back on either machine when you're done.

This is exactly what GeekSquad or anybody would do but they'd charge you $200 - $350 for it. Insane!

I deleted some files from Dreamweaver and don't know how to recover them. Any suggestions?
Q. They're not on my thumb drive anymore and not in the recylce bin. Where do they go?

A. Sounds to me like a problem that can only be fixed by data recovery software. With data recovery software you can perform a full system search for any files that may have been lost or permanently deleted. The program is completely free to try, simply install it and see what it comes up with. I use this software:

what's a good data recovery company that can get data off a failed hard drive?
Q. There are so many that come up when I search on google, I just want to make sure I'm sending my hard drive off to the best one. There is also one here in the Bay Area (called bay area recovery or something) does anyone know if that's any good?

A. If you feel adventurous, try removing the hard drive, placing it in a plastic freezer bag, and then freezing it in a freezer for at least 24 hours. Be prepared with an external storage device of some sort (thumb drive, USB->IDE adapter with hard drive, etc.), then replace the now chilled hard drive in your laptop.

Cross your fingers and switch on laptop. It just may return to life long enough for you to copy your data unto an external backup device.

Chances that this will work: 50%

(It's the first procedure that data recovery shops will try, in any case.)
