Does anyone know how to reset a Dell Inspiron computer to factory settings?
Q. Please need help.I heard that the factory settings can be selected by pressing ctrl+f11 when the dell logo is up after the computer starting up. I heard that F8 did the job while the dell logo after start up but that doesn't do anything because my dell inspiron 560 is from 2011. There is no virus it's just my computer is messed up with junk. Any help :( thanks

A. Sounds like you are talking about 2 things.

First thing: During POST (Power On Self Test) which is the black screen with Dell logo and some instructions like Press F2 to enter Setup, Press Del to .......etc........you can access the CMOS and BIOS screens by pressing one of the specified keys (different for different models, which is why I cannot be specific for you here) So to reset the BIOS, you would enter the Setup screens, and select the menu option to reset to Default.

The second thing it sounds like you attempted was to enter Windows Safe Mode. Pressing F8 after POST but before the Windows logo shows up will allow you to boot your machine using minimal OS settings and drivers. It is helpful when you have a boot issue, for cleaning virus' or malware and doing diagnostics.

If you want to reset BIOS to default have at it...it will not help your system based on what I believe you are asking. You want to wipe the hard drive and go back to a factory fresh "out of the box" machine.

To do that you will have to obtain (assuming you do not have them) the System Recovery Disk set that ships with new systems. Those disks contain the original image of the system as it shipped from Dell.
If you do not have the disk set, you can try to get it from Dell directly, failing that you will have to search ebay, Craigslist etc.....to try and find a set.

If you do find them, you simply insert disk 1 in the CD/DVD drive and fire up the system.

NOTE *** This process Formats the Hard Drive, you WILL LOSE ALL YOUR PERSONAL DATA and any programs you have installed beyond what came with the computer. Back your stuff up first if you want to save it.

OR

Obtain a licensed copy of the Operating System you wish to install and start fresh.....you'll need to obtain copies of all the software you want to install after the OS is on. i.e. MS Word, Firefox, iTunes etc.........same as above though, you will need to back up your data or it will be lost when you format the drive in preparation for the OS install.

How do I reformat my Dell using recovery partition?
Q. My E310 Dimension Dell computer is in need of a hard drive sweep. It has an internal HD instead of the disks needed to reformat the computer back to its original state, and I forgot how to do it. I know you need to input a button at the start up screen, but I don't know which.

Help plz, thank you

A. This really depends on what operating system the system shipped with. This link will display instructions for both XP and Vista: http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/dsn/document?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs&docid=3E48AE3870775D64E040A68F5B2877D4&journalid=524614117B953F22E040AE0AB5E177D7&Query=&SystemID=&ServiceTag=&contenttype=&os=&component=&lang=&doclang=&toggle=&dl=

As per the link, if the system shipped with XP you will just need to press Ctrl and F11 at the Dell screen when the computer first turns on.

If the system shipped with Windows Vista:

"Restart the computer. To do this, click Start, click the arrow next to the Lock button, and then click Restart.

As the computer restarts, press the F8 key until the Advanced Boot Options menu appears on the screen.
Note: You must press F8 before the Windows logo appears on the screen. If you press F8 after the Windows logo appears, the Advanced Boot Options menu does not appear on the screen. If you do not see the Advanced Boot Options menu, restart the computer, and then repeat this step until you see the menu on the screen.

Press the (Down Arrow) to select Repair Your Computer on the Advanced Boot Options menu, and then press Enter.

Specify the language settings that you want, and then click Next.

Log in as a user who has administrative credentials, and then click OK.

Click Dell Factory Image Restore.

In the Dell Factory Image Restore window, click Next.

Click to select the check box for Yes, reformat hard drive and restore system software to factory condition.

Click Next. The computer is restored to the default factory configuration.

When the restore operation is completed, click Finish to restart the computer."

Please note that these types of restores will remove everything that has been installed/added (programs, data/files etc.) on the computer. These types of restores can be performed as many times as you like.

I hope this helps.
