Q. Hi i just did a software update for my nokia e71 and forgot to back up my data xD now i've lost basically anything, is there anyway to recover the lost data?
A. Unlikely, as mostly like the space used by deleted pictures are used by other files.
You can use asoftech photo recovery (one of best photo recovery software) to check whether these pictures are recoverable.

I have an XD card with data on it. It has failed. How can I get the data off of it?
Q. I have tried retrieving the data using my computer and photo printer, but they don't recognize it either.
A. Hi have you another computer you could try reading the card with or a camera. I would recommend booting your computer with a Linux boot disk, something like Helix from www.efense.com/helix which is designed to let you see your data in read only mode. The XD Card/device would be recognized as something like /media/sda or /media/sda1 be very careful though as the last thing you want to do is make the mistake of choosing the wrong drive and overwriting any boot sector on the C:\ if you decide to work in Linux and are comfortable with the Linux environment and commands. Try to have another spare hard drive or another flash device either the same size or larger to duplicate the card in order to attempt a recovery. However if the data on here is vital I would recommend going to a professional data recovery company with the approach to recovering your data.
I'm a certified data recovery specialist and am willing to offer you more help should you need it please feel free to PM me with messenger or email me. I will do what I can and at no charge...there's a rarity for you
There are lots of possibilities and reasons as to why your card may be inaccessible. Please tell me has the Card been formatted / partitioned / dropped while in a device? The more information you can provide the easier it is to decide what route you should take. The card may have encountered physical or logical damage.
There are also lots of free programs available out on the internet but be very careful as some may cause further damage to your data.
A little bit of info on common Flash storage problems from personal experience sometimes heat can cause damage to Flash drives and render them useless. However complete failure is very uncommon, another possibility is that the card reader may have encountered static damage and rendered the controller useless. That is just a list of possibilities.
If you have another XD card I would also recommend trying that in your readers but I do think the problem lies with the card itself as you have already tried the reader in your printer.

How do I retrieve deleted photos from an XD-Picture card?
Q. I am using an Olympus 16MB picture card in my Olympus Cam Mediamaster camera and was wanting to know if the pictures I deleted on my camera where still retrieveable somehow by accessing the picture card itself...any help or suggestions?
A. You can very often recover deleted pictures from a camera memory card or USB Memory stick. However, to increase the chances of being able to recover pictures after they have been deleted you must not save any new photos, files or data to it.
When you delete pictures (or any files) from a memory card or USB memory device the data itself isn't deleted, just the file system pointers that says where the data for those files is located. The area where the deleted picture data was stored is also now marked as free space so it is available to the system for any new files to be written there instead.
If and when that happens, then it is too late to recover your deleted pictures so it is very, very important that new pictures or files aren't saved to the memory card in the meantime.
One of the easiest ways to see if your deleted pictures can be recovered is to try some photo recovery software.
One tip is to try a demo version of a commercial product that will scan the memory card for deleted pictures and show you exactly what pictures can be recovered. At least that will show you if you can recover the deleted pictures or if it's too late already.
