I have an XD card with data on it. It has failed. How can I get the data off of it?
Q. I have tried retrieving the data using my computer and photo printer, but they don't recognize it either.

A. Hi have you another computer you could try reading the card with or a camera. I would recommend booting your computer with a Linux boot disk, something like Helix from www.efense.com/helix which is designed to let you see your data in read only mode. The XD Card/device would be recognized as something like /media/sda or /media/sda1 be very careful though as the last thing you want to do is make the mistake of choosing the wrong drive and overwriting any boot sector on the C:\ if you decide to work in Linux and are comfortable with the Linux environment and commands. Try to have another spare hard drive or another flash device either the same size or larger to duplicate the card in order to attempt a recovery. However if the data on here is vital I would recommend going to a professional data recovery company with the approach to recovering your data.
I'm a certified data recovery specialist and am willing to offer you more help should you need it please feel free to PM me with messenger or email me. I will do what I can and at no charge...there's a rarity for you
There are lots of possibilities and reasons as to why your card may be inaccessible. Please tell me has the Card been formatted / partitioned / dropped while in a device? The more information you can provide the easier it is to decide what route you should take. The card may have encountered physical or logical damage.
There are also lots of free programs available out on the internet but be very careful as some may cause further damage to your data.
A little bit of info on common Flash storage problems from personal experience sometimes heat can cause damage to Flash drives and render them useless. However complete failure is very uncommon, another possibility is that the card reader may have encountered static damage and rendered the controller useless. That is just a list of possibilities.
If you have another XD card I would also recommend trying that in your readers but I do think the problem lies with the card itself as you have already tried the reader in your printer.

You may not be allowed to save or even transfer data to your E Drive as most systems use this as your recovery drive in case things go wrong, that's the main reason you have it.

How to find out if your E drive is a recovery drive?

click your Start orb, then "Computer" how big is drive E: ? if it's
anywhere form 4-10 Gig then its probably a recovery disk. If its larger
then it probably is another hard drive or partition that can be used so then it would be better to copy and paste files from your C drive to the E drive, and still download data to the C Drive. How to do so?

Open two windows (one for C:, one for E:), right click on the file(s) in C: and while holding down the right mouse click drag files to E:. When you release you'll get a pop up window asking if you want to Copy (default), Move, Create Shortcut or Cancel.

If however your E drive is a recovery drive, then i suggest purchasing an External Hard Drive and moving Data to that instead, its also extremely use full if your computer doesn't want to start one day, then you have your external hard drive secure.

All the best
