How can I clear the hard drive on my computer?

Q. I have a computer with XP professional and it is trashed. When I boot the computer I get the HP screen then it goes to a screen where I can choose to start in safe mode, safe mode in network, safe mode in DOS, and start windows in normal mode. I tried all of them and the furthest I get is with Windows normal. It takes me to a FAT32 screen where it wants to scan the disc for problems. After it scans the computer restarts and Im back at the beginning. I just want to clean the hard drive off completely . I dont have a boot disc. I have the OS disc though.
Is there anyway I can use another computer to clear the hard drive?

A. If you would like to erase and wipe all information from your harddrive, I reccommend you use Active@ KillDisk. This powerful and compact DOS software allows you to destroy all data on hard and floppy drives completely, excluding any possibility of future recovery of deleted files and folders. This is security software for unrecoverable data elimination for any computer capable of booting in DOS mode from floppy drive. It uses access to the drive's data on a physical level via BIOS bypassing logical drive structure organization, thus it does not matter operating systems and file systems located on the machine, it can be DOS, Windows 95 / 98, Windows NT / 2000 / XP, Linux, Unix for PC. Active@ KillDisk conforms to US Department of Defense clearing and sanitizing standard DoD 5220.22-M. You can be sure that once you clean up with Active@ KillDisk, sensitive information is purged out forever. We highly recommend you to run this FREE utility for the hard and floppy drives you want to dispose of, recycle, re-use, sell or donate to somebody.

Please note: If the CIA or FBI is after you, destroy the hard drive. It is possible to recover data even if it has been erased and written over many times.

How do I repair a hard drive from DOS without a floppy disk?
Q. My hard drive is having problems, so that when Windows starts it takes a few scratches and then it hangs. Is there a way for me to fix it from DOS? I don't have a floppy drive in that computer, only a CD drive.

A. I would first find out if the drive is bad by running some hard drive diagnostics. Two that I recommend are from Seagate and Hitachi. Both of these can be used by creating a boot cd which they have already created and all you have to do is burn the cd.

Seagate (Seagate Tools Desktop Edition is what you need to download): http://www.seagate.com/support/seatools/index.html

Hitachi (Drive Fitness Test, download the cd image): http://www.hitachigst.com/hdd/support/download.htm

If the drive is bad, then the drive will need to be replace and their is a good chance, if it is bad, that your data will be lost. There are companies out there that provide data recovery services but they usually cost thousands of dollars.

Where can i get a restore disk for my dell desktop?
Q. I can't do a systems restore because when i turn the computer on i can't get to START. I try starting in 1)safety mode, 2) last ???, etc and it just keeps rollong through a DOS screen. I need to be able just to stop it from rolling through commands. So if I can put in a disk i can start from another drive.

A. You should not format or, store additional data on the recovery partition D: Drive
Here are instructions from Dell on how to use it.
If for some reason you can not use the recovery partition. You will need the recovery disks. These either came with your computer or, you made them when it was new. Dell allows you to order one set per machine for free. See the link below.
