How do i get data off a bad hard drive?

Q. I have a dell laptop running vista home premium.
My hard drive crashed and i got it replaced, i was wondering how to get data off my old hard drive.
I have plugged the old hard drive into an external hard drive case and connected it to my computer via usb.
It appears in 'my computer' but when i click on it i can not open it and it sometimes freezes my laptop.
Is there and good hard drive recovery programs that are easy to use? or any other tips to help me?

A. The positive side seems to be that your HDD can still be detected. But if you are not an expert (I certainly am not)...do not attempt to recover the data yourself as you might end up doing more damage. Take it to a data recovery service. They might be able to help you as your HDD is not completely dead, but be warned it is not cheap. Hope my 2 cents helps.

What company can look at my computer to see what is wrong with it and if it needs data recovery service...?
Q. for the cheapest price. It doesnt turn on it may need data recovery or i may be able to transfer the memory(or something like that). but I dont know what i need to do or how

A. Do any of the lights turn on? Is the screen showing any images? Do you have a warranty on the laptop? If you need the data from the hard drive you can get an external drive case for a 2.5 inch drive and put your drive in there and use it as an external drive. You may have to goto Geek squad or something to have the problem diagnosed and repaired. I've been a tech for laptops, desktops etc for over 10 years and if people try to fix them themselves without knowing what they are doing they seem to make the problems worse.

How can I retrieve some travel pictures I lost when I had a computer crash.?
Q. I have heard there is some kind of software to open the deleted data of any computer. That the information contained in the hard disc never disappears, just gets compressed.
Any ideas or information is welcome.

A. It's true that simply deleting a file doesn't totally make it disappear, even when you clear the recycle/trash bin. However, the sectors that were used get marked for deletion. When the hard drive looks for space to write new data and happens to encounter those said sectors, whatever data that was there will be overwritten.

Therefore, it's very good practice that if you completely delete something and want it back, you should IMMEDIATELY perform an undelete to recover it. The longer you wait and continue to write new data, the less of a chance you have to fully recover those deleted files.

There are various software tools that offer the undelete facility; some are free while others have to be purchased. I can't recommend any because I'm a freak for making backups of my data, so I never need to undelete. However, a web search on UNDELETE PROGRAMS will give you a wealth of hits to explore.

You didn't say specifically how your computer crashed. If your hard drive survived, you can buy a cheap external case (USB or Firewire) and install the hard drive in it to attempt data recovery. If the drive is completely dead (it won't spin up at all), you'll have to utilize a data recovery service where they literally disassemble the drive to hopefully recover the data, which can be an expensive process.

Best of luck!
