Q. I recently bough a Hitachi simple drive. Unfortunately my computer has since crashed. How do I restore the data that I have lost instead of looking through hundreds of zipped files and copying and pasting. I have tried windows recovery but it does not work. Is the drive faulty?
A. Your question is unclear. I'm going to recreate your question to what I think it means.
You bought a Hitachi drive, and replaced the one in your computer. Now the Hitachi has crashed and you want the data off of your old drive? Reinstall it and copy to a flash drive or burn a CD. This is the same thing you would do to backup your data BEFORE a crash. So you've learned why we back up.
Windows Restore will only work if you a Windows Backup, also done in advance of the crash.
Why do you have to look through hundreds of files? Are trying to just get part of the data? Just retrieve it all, and sort through it later. Copy your entire My Documents folder to a large flash drive or burn a DVD.
I still don't know if you have two drives, one crashed and one working drive, or if you only have the crashed Hitachi. Which drive are you trying to recover data from?

A. This has worked for me several times, so I will pass it on. Plug it in the port, heat it with a hair dryer, wait a minute, plug it in and out a couple times. If it still does not work try the same thing with compressed air to cool it. If it start working copy the data as it may stop working again any time...

Are programs downloaded onto my computer saved on the hard drive?
Q. I recently detroyed my laptop, which was running Windows XP. Dell is sending me a replacement laptop, which is upgraded to Windows Vista. Are the programs that I had on my destroyed laptop saved onto the hard drive? For example, I had Microsoft Office 2007, Print Shop Deluxe, etc. I have the hard drive, but I don't know if it was ruined too. Let's say my hard drive works fine, if I place my hard drive into the new laptop will I be able to retrieve all the information I had saved since it's now going to be running Windows Vista?
A. Most windows programs (most, not all) have to be installed into the running operating system. Even if you do have access to your old hard-drive by going through a USB enclosure (very possible), you will really only have access to your own files, not the previously installed programs. All your archives (ZIPs, RARs, etc., and self extracting EXEs) are also available. The key is can you find them?
I'd suggest you go ahead and use an enclosure and wade through all the files on your old HD. Anything that is a part of installed software, just trash (you'll probably have to reinstall it). If there are certain settings that you want to keep (like normal.doc in Word, INIs, etc) hang on to them.
If there is logical corruption in the HD information, simply copying information isn't going to work. You will need software that can recover the data for you (like Ontrack Easy Recovery Pro). [Warning, you can not recover a partition except to another partition of equal or greater size. File recovery is another simpler matter.]
Given enough time (if you're really serious about data recovery) what you'll have left is just your stuff. At that point move what you need to your internal drive, wipe out the external and use it for archival purposes.
Hope this helps?
