What's the best medical or hospital job without a medical degree?
Q. I have a BA in art.
Nothing too stressful or gross.
Thanks!
Nothing too stressful or gross.
Thanks!
A. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the medical field will generate 3 million new jobs by 2016, more than any other industry. Training and qualifications for such jobs will vary by state and by facility, but many do not require a college degree. Note, however, that jobs you can get without a college degree are among the lowest-paying jobs in the health-care industry.
Medical Records
Medical records clerks and transcriptionists create and store files containing patients' health information. Records clerks compile the data for future access for medical and insurance purposes. Transcriptionists input doctors' dictations into standard report format for a written record of patient visits and tests. Training varies, according to the BLS, but most clerks and transcriptionists complete a one- to two-year program at a community college or vocational school. The training typically covers anatomy and physiology, medical terminology and clerical skills.
Home Health Aides and Nursing Assistants
Home health aides and nursing assistants help patients with personal care tasks, such as dressing, bathing and toileting. Nursing assistants also provide minor medical care---such as taking vital signs and changing dressings---and typically receive training in patient care. A related position, activity aide, coordinates exercises, games, outings and other entertainment for nursing home residents. Many activity aides start out as nurses' aides and receive on-the-job training.
Dietary Aides
Dietary aides work with cooks and dieticians to ensure that patients---such as diabetics and those recovery from a heart attack---receive healthy meals that meet their nutritional needs. Most dietary aides learn on the job but some may receive food-service training at a vocational school.
Pharmacy Technicians
Pharmacy technicians help pharmacists fill prescriptions, and may work at a stand-alone retail pharmacy or one located in a hospital. While there are no national educational requirements, most pharmacy technicians must complete a one- to two-year certification program and pass an exam administered by the state in which they live.
Licensed Practical Nurse
Licensed practical nurses (LPNs) work in nursing homes, hospitals and in home-care settings under the direction of a registered nurse (RN), who has more responsibilities and training than an LPN. An LPN's daily tasks may include taking vital signs, performing basic tests and administering medication. LPNs are generally licensed after completing a one-year program.
Associate's Degree Jobs
Most other medical jobs require at least an associate's degree. However, community colleges and vocational schools may offer flexible schedules and online courses so that training may be completed in less than two years, often while the student is working full or part time. Health-care jobs requiring at least a two-year degree include X-ray technician, dental hygienist, ultrasound technician, respiratory therapist, occupational or physical therapy assistant and massage therapist.
