Data Recovery Training?

Q. I'm interested in becoming a PC data recovery/forensics technician. Can anyone suggest any books, courses or professional training? (The industry seems very fragmented with companies promoting their own agendas/products).

A. For general certification, look getting Security+ first. It would help if you did the A+ Certification training first. It would give you a good base for the hardware side of it.

Here's 2 places to start:

Another way of determining what certifications are required, look on a company's website for their reguirements. An example would be Ontrack:

Please Help Me
It doesn't even let me in.

A. This needs hands-on help. You need to decide whether you'll do it yourself or go to a Repair Shop.

Here's how to find one. Go to Google and type in something like:
computer repair ny,ny
and the search result will be something like this:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=computer+repair+ny%2Cny&aq=f&oq=

I chose NY, NY because I knew I'd get hits there. You should put your own town name and state there. Or pick a close-by larger town or city. Depending on where you are, the repair should cost you from $80-150.

Otherwise, if you try it yourself, the first thing to do is read up on your options here:
http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Windows/en-US/Help/f768809f-ed90-415f-a83f-89b42108b3551033.mspx#EFF

Probably you will use the System Recovery Options Menu available through your Windows installation disk:
http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Windows/en-US/help/326b756b-1601-435e-99d0-1585439470351033.mspx
In addition to Startup Repair, try to run a file system check (chkdsk) and fix the boot sector (bootcfg).

If you've tried everything in System Recovery Options, and it still doesn't work, use another computer to get a copy of something like Knoppix, or BART:
http://knopper.net/knoppix-mirrors/index-en.html
... and burn the image to a CD. Then boot to that CD so you can get your data copied from your hard drive to a USB hard drive. Then reinstall.
How?

As you can see, this is a lengthy and techie issue to solve, so I recommend you get a pro to do it. But it's up to you. Good luck!
